Emergency Water Standard
Stored water first. Treatment matched to the actual hazard. A practical system for home, evacuation, vehicle, and workplace use.
Step one
Calculate a real household requirement
One gallon per person per day is the starting point, not a universal ceiling. Climate, health, exertion, sanitation, food preparation, and pets can increase demand.
Build toward this stronger household reserve when space, container weight, rotation, and budget permit.
Water is heavy. Separate the home reserve from the portable quantity and identify reliable resupply options.
A 12-gallon family baseline weighs about 100 pounds before containers. Store most of it where it can be safely accessed, and give each evacuation carrier a realistic amount plus a treatment and resupply plan.
Four layers
Build a water system, not a single filter
A good plan survives a damaged container, an empty route source, a clogged filter, or a contamination advisory the filter cannot address.
Stored safe water
The fastest, lowest-complexity supply. Use commercially bottled water or properly sanitized food-grade containers.
Portable water
Carry enough to move safely without depending on immediately finding a source. Divide weight among capable carriers.
Treatment matched to hazard
Choose filtration, purification, boiling, or disinfection based on the contamination risk and verified product claims.
Resupply and containers
Know where safe water may be distributed, how it will be transported, and how clean and dirty containers remain separated.
Parts and maintenance
Pack required adapters, seals, cleaning tools, batteries, chemicals, or replacement elements. Protect filters from freezing when their instructions require it.
Advisories decide the method
A boil-water advisory, do-not-drink advisory, and do-not-use advisory are different. Follow current local instructions.

Keep clean water clean
Container material, cleaning, closure, temperature, handling, and rotation matter. A large quantity in a contaminated container is not a reserve.

Large volumes are heavy. Keep containers stable, protect them from impact and freezing, avoid obstructing exits, and do not store the only supply where a flood or structural hazard will make it unreachable.

The label must match the hazard
“Filter,” “purifier,” and “treatment” are not interchangeable promises. Verify the exact reduction claim, test standard, capacity, flow, and operating limits.

CDC states that water containing fuel, toxic chemicals, or radioactive material cannot be made safe by boiling or disinfecting. Do not experiment during an advisory; use bottled water or another source and contact the health department.
Prove the system
Run a water-outage drill
Do not wait for an emergency to learn that the container cannot be lifted, the adapter is missing, the flow is too slow, or the instructions cannot be read.
- Count every person and calculate three-day and two-week targets.
- Inventory actual stored gallons rather than container capacity.
- Inspect seals, dates, leaks, bulging, odor, heat exposure, and location.
- Carry the planned portable amount over a realistic route.
- Assemble and operate the filter with the exact containers and adapters.
- Time the production of one gallon under realistic conditions.
- Read the complete treatment limits and freeze/maintenance instructions.
- Practice receiving an advisory and choosing the correct response.

How much water should I store for a 72-hour emergency?
CDC guidance starts at one gallon per person per day for at least three days. Multiply the number of people by the number of days. Store more for hot weather, illness, pregnancy, pets, or other household needs, and work toward a two-week home supply when practical.
Can a camping filter make any water safe to drink?
No. Portable filters have different verified reduction claims, and many do not remove viruses, bacteria, dissolved chemicals, fuels, salts, or heavy metals. Match the product's certified or tested claims to the hazard and follow official advisories and manufacturer directions.
Is boiling filtered water always enough?
Boiling is effective against germs when performed according to current CDC directions, but it does not make water with fuel, toxic chemicals, radioactive material, salts, or heavy metals safe. Use another safe source when chemical contamination is known or suspected.
How often should stored tap water be replaced?
