Ensuring this injury is placed into traction as quickly as possible is crucial to minimize muscle damage and discomfort. Muscle spasms resulting from the fracture will cause movement of muscle across fragmented bone placing the injured party into a cycle of pain and spasms. The unique design of the Slishman Traction Splint allows it to be deployed in under 60 seconds. By placing the injured leg into traction, the STS (Slishman Traction Splint) keeps the leg stabilized and eliminates the potentially harmful spasms. The Slishman Traction Splint was developed to improve operational shortcomings of previous traction splint designs. Dr. Sam Slishman's new lightweight and compact splint placed the traction mechanism at the patient's hip, this improved design allowed Femur traction to be applied through the extendable pole creating a pushing force from the ankle rather than pulling from the foot.
